Living in Başakşehir

Başakşehir grew as a planned town rather than an old neighbourhood, and it shows: wide avenues, green spaces and large residential sites with their own facilities. Kayaşehir, in the north of the district, has seen a lot of new building around Başakşehir City Hospital, one of the largest hospital complexes in the city. Metro lines link the district to the rest of the European side. Bahçeşehir, with its pond park and villas, has its own page.

Buying here

You will find both resale apartments in established sites and new projects. Compare the building's age, the monthly site fee (aidat) and the walk to the metro, and check whether a project has its building permit and a realistic delivery date. See apartments in Istanbul and current projects.

  • Istanbul Property Prices: Why They Double from One Neighbourhood to the Next

Istanbul prices vary widely because the city is a chain of cities within a city. The most expensive are the central and Bosphorus-front neighbourhoods on both sides; the cheapest are the western and northern outskirts, where new projects are concentrated. The main price drivers: proximity to centres and the sea, access to the metro or Metrobüs, building age and quality in a high earthquake-risk city, and complex amenities. Always compare within the same neighbourhood, and see live figures on the Istanbul page.

  • Arabic and international schools in Istanbul: how to choose a school for your children

Istanbul offers four main options: free Turkish state schools, Turkish private schools, international schools with foreign curricula, and schools that teach an Arabic curriculum. Before enrolling, check what type of licence the school holds from the Turkish Ministry of Education, whether your home country recognises its certificates, and how far it is and what school transport it offers, because the school may decide which neighbourhood you buy in.
