Living in Başakşehir: family complexes, the city hospital and the metro line

In short

Başakşehir is a planned district on the European side of Istanbul, in the north-west of the city, known for its family residential complexes with facilities, its large city hospital, its parks and shopping centres, and a metro line linking it to Istanbul’s network. It attracts Arab families with its modernity and organisation. Before buying for residency purposes, check that the neighbourhood is not closed to registering foreigners’ addresses.

Başakşehir is an example of the new Istanbul: planned streets, spacious residential complexes and large parks, away from the density of the old city. It is one of the areas our Arab clients ask about most in Istanbul.

Location

It lies on the European side of Istanbul, in the north-west of the city, and includes several neighbourhoods, among them Bahçeşehir, known for its villas and complexes.

What sets it apart?

1. Family complexes

Modern complexes with security, swimming pools, playgrounds and parking, designed for families. Most were built in the last two decades to modern building standards. See the earthquake building safety guide.

2. The city hospital

It is home to the large Başakşehir city hospital (Çam ve Sakura), one of the biggest hospitals in Turkey, giving residents easy access to specialist care.

3. The metro

A metro line links it to Istanbul’s network, reducing reliance on the car in a congested city. See the Istanbul transport guide.

4. Parks and shopping

Large parks and green spaces, big shopping centres, and many private and international schools. See the guide to Arabic and international schools in Istanbul.

What to watch out for

  • Distance from the centres: the journey to the historic districts and business centres can be long in traffic.
  • Large supply: the sheer number of projects means competition when selling and renting, so choosing well matters.
  • Closed neighbourhoods: check the neighbourhood’s status if residency is your goal. See the closed neighbourhoods guide.
  • Maintenance fees: complexes with full facilities have higher monthly fees. See the maintenance fees guide.

Who does it suit?

  • Families who want a modern complex with facilities and parks.
  • Those who want to be close to a major hospital.
  • Investors targeting family rentals.

In short

Başakşehir is a modern, well-organised family district with a major hospital, a metro and parks. Choose a complex close to transport and with good management, check the neighbourhood’s status if you want residency, and compare prices within the district. Uzungöl is a mountain lake village in Trabzon's Çaykara district, about 99 km from the city centre (1.5 to 2 hours by car) and roughly 1,100 m above sea level. The best months are May to September, with mild days and cool nights; in winter it is snow-covered and the lake can freeze.

  • Trabzon weather month by month: rain, summer and winter as residents experience them

Trabzon is mild all year round: a warm, humid summer with highs usually between 25 and 28°C in July and August, and a mild winter on the coast at around 10°C by day, with rain spread across the year and heaviest in autumn and early winter. Snow falls on only a few days on the coast but is plentiful in the highlands. The climate means year-round greenery, and it also means that insulation, ventilation and heating are essential when choosing a property.

  • Istanbul’s Asian side: a neighbourhood guide for Arab buyers

Istanbul’s Asian side is generally calmer than the European side. It brings together historic districts such as Üsküdar and Kadıköy, a modern financial centre in Ataşehir, a long residential coastline from Maltepe to Kartal, Pendik and Tuzla, and new inland districts such as Sancaktepe. It is linked to the European side by the Marmaray line under the Bosphorus, ferries and bridges, and it is home to Sabiha Gökçen Airport. Choose your district by how close it is to a rail or metro line.
