Trabzon weather month by month: rain, summer and winter as residents experience them

In short

Trabzon is mild all year round: a warm, humid summer with highs usually between 25 and 28°C in July and August, and a mild winter on the coast at around 10°C by day, with rain spread across the year and heaviest in autumn and early winter. Snow falls on only a few days on the coast but is plentiful in the highlands. The climate means year-round greenery, and it also means that insulation, ventilation and heating are essential when choosing a property.

“Is it true that it rains a lot in Trabzon?” Yes. And that is the secret of the greenery its visitors love. But understanding the climate month by month helps you choose when to visit, and choose a property that is comfortable all year round.

The big picture

Trabzon has a mild, humid climate, shaped by the Black Sea and the mountains behind it:

  • No extreme heat or bitter cold on the coast.
  • Rain spread across the year, heaviest in autumn and early winter.
  • High humidity most of the time.
  • A big difference between the coast and the highlands.

The figures below are approximate coastal averages and vary from year to year.

Winter: December, January and February

  • Temperature: around 10 to 12°C by day and 3 to 6°C at night.
  • Rain: December is one of the wettest months.
  • Snow: a few days on the coast, and plenty in the highlands.

Spring: March, April and May

  • Temperature: rising from around 12°C in March to around 19°C in May.
  • Nature: the most beautiful season for greenery and flowers.
  • Rain: less in May.

Summer: June, July and August

  • Temperature: around 23°C in June, and between 25 and 28°C in July and August.
  • The sea: becomes warm enough for swimming in July and August.
  • Humidity: high, and fog sometimes covers the highlands.
  • The season: peak visitor numbers from the Gulf and the Arab world. See the guide to summer in Trabzon for Gulf families.

Autumn: September, October and November

  • Temperature: around 24°C in September, falling to around 16°C in November.
  • Rain: October and November are among the wettest months.
  • September: one of the best months to visit.

What does the climate mean for your property?

  1. Insulation and ventilation: to fight humidity and mould. See the guide to winter and heating in Trabzon.
  2. Orientation and sun: north-facing apartments looking out to sea get less sun. See the guide to view, orientation and sunlight.
  3. Heating: essential for several months. See the guide to heating systems.
  4. Hillside roads: visit the property on a rainy day if you can.
  5. A property left closed: needs regular visits or a dehumidifier if it stays shut for months.

Summary

Trabzon is a mild, green and rainy city: a warm, humid summer, a mild winter on the coast, and rain that peaks in autumn. Plan your visit for June or September for the most comfort, and choose a well-insulated, well-ventilated property for comfort all year round.

  • Istanbul’s Asian side: a neighbourhood guide for Arab buyers

Istanbul’s Asian side is generally calmer than the European side. It brings together historic districts such as Üsküdar and Kadıköy, a modern financial centre in Ataşehir, a long residential coastline from Maltepe to Kartal, Pendik and Tuzla, and new inland districts such as Sancaktepe. It is linked to the European side by the Marmaray line under the Bosphorus, ferries and bridges, and it is home to Sabiha Gökçen Airport. Choose your district by how close it is to a rail or metro line.

  • Day trips from Trabzon: highlands, lakes, monasteries and caves

Trabzon is an excellent base for day trips: Sümela Monastery clinging to a cliff in Maçka, Uzungöl lake, highland plateaus such as Hıdırnebi, nearby Sera Lake, the Atatürk Mansion in the city, Çal Cave and, a little further, the Ayder plateau in Rize. The best time for the plateaus is June to September; set off early during the summer holidays to avoid the crowds.
