Summer in Trabzon for Gulf families: the season, housing and daily life

In short
The season for Gulf families in Trabzon usually runs from June to August, peaking during the summer holidays and Eid. The weather is warm and humid, with highs usually between 25 and 28°C, and occasional mist and rain. Many families move from seasonal rentals to owning an apartment they live in during the summer and let for the rest of the year, on a long-term contract or under a tourism licence. Book early, and choose a home close to the main roads and markets.

For some years now Trabzon has been the summer destination for many Gulf families: greenery, mild air, the sea and the highland plateaus, and a familiar daily life. As the visits repeat, many ask: should we keep renting, or buy?

- July and August: the peak, especially during the school holidays and Eid.
- September: calm and lovely weather for those who can stay later.

Seasonal rental or your own apartment?
Renting
- Flexibility to choose a different place each year.
- High seasonal prices and a new search every time.
- Short-term letting requires a licence held by the landlord, so make sure it is licensed.
Owning an apartment
- Your home is ready every summer, with your belongings.
- Potential income for the rest of the year.
- Responsibility for maintenance and management. See the guide to managing your property from abroad.
Letting your apartment for the rest of the year
- A long-term contract with a family or a student, with a clause letting you use it in summer if you draft the contract that way, or let for a full year. See the long-term letting guide.
- Licensed tourist letting if the building’s rules allow it. See the guide to the short-term rental law.
Daily life in summer
- Mosques are close by in every neighbourhood.
- Weekly markets and shopping centres. See the guide to food and markets.
- Trips to the highland plateaus and lakes. See the day trips guide.
- Getting around: a car is comfortable for trips, the minibus for daily life. See the guide to getting around Trabzon.
Practical tips
- Book early: flights, accommodation and car hire at peak season.
- Bring an umbrella and a warm layer.
- Choose a home near a main road to make trips easier.
- Visit the apartment on a rainy day before buying if you can.

Winter in Trabzon: heating, damp, insulation and what your apartment needs
Winter in Trabzon is mild on the coast but rainy and humid, so the biggest challenge is damp, not cold. Most apartments are heated by their own gas boiler or by central heating, and good wall and window insulation lowers the bill and prevents mould. Choose a well-insulated, well-ventilated apartment, watch the north walls and corners, and if the apartment stays closed in winter, leave it on low heating or with a dehumidifier, with regular visits.
