After Turkish citizenship: what changes in your life and your paperwork?

In short
After the citizenship decision you receive a new Turkish national ID number, then obtain your identity card and passport from the civil registry office. Update your details at the tapu (land registry), your bank and e-Devlet (the government portal); you no longer need a residence or work permit. The obligation not to sell the property for three years remains, and men are subject to the military service law, with cases where prior service counts and exemptions. Tax on worldwide income depends on actual residence, not on citizenship alone. And make sure your home country allows dual citizenship.

Your citizenship decision has arrived. The next step is not just celebrating, but sorting out your new papers and understanding your rights and obligations. This guide brings together what changes, as it stands in 2026.
Your new documents
- Turkish national ID number: you receive a new Turkish identity number that replaces your foreigner number.
- Identity card: issued by the civil registry office, by appointment.
- Turkish passport: also applied for at the civil registry office, by appointment.
- e-Devlet account: with your new number. See the e-Devlet guide for foreigners.
Records to update
- Tapu (land registry): update the identity details on your property.
- Banks: link your accounts to your new number.
- Taxes: your national ID number becomes your tax number.
- Utilities and insurance: electricity, water, gas and health insurance.
What you no longer need
- Residence: you no longer need a residence permit.
- Work permit: you work like any other citizen. See the guide to work and business for residents.
- Restrictions on foreign ownership: you buy property as a citizen.
Your rights
- Living and working without permits.
- Voting in elections.
- Education for your children as citizens. See the guide to studying in Turkey.
- Public services as a citizen.
Your obligations
Not selling the property for three years
The obligation registered at the tapu remains until the end of its term. The property cannot be sold before then. See the guide to citizenship file mistakes.
Military service
Male citizens are subject to the military service law. There are cases where service already completed in your previous country counts, cases linked to age at naturalisation, and options of paid service or service paid in foreign currency for those living abroad. Know your sons’ situation before you apply.
Taxes
Tax on worldwide income depends on residence in Turkey (such as living there for more than six months a year), not on citizenship alone. Property and rental taxes stay the same. See the rental income tax guide and the annual property tax guide.
Dual citizenship
Turkey allows it, but some Arab countries do not, or require prior permission. This is something to settle before you apply.
Summary
After citizenship: a new national ID number, an identity card and a passport, and updates at the tapu, your bank and e-Devlet. You are freed from residence and work permits, the three-year no-sale obligation remains, and you need to keep an eye on military service for your sons and on tax residence.

Turkish Citizenship Through Property: 9 Mistakes That Delay or Sink Your Application (2026)
What most often delays or sinks citizenship-by-property applications: paying in cash or through a third party, no currency exchange certificate from a Turkish bank, a valuation report below $400,000, splitting an off-plan price across several promise-to-sell contracts, buying a property already used in a previous citizenship application, forgetting the three-year no-sale annotation, uncertified family documents, and names spelled differently across documents. These rules are as they stand in 2026.

Turkish citizenship by real estate investment
Foreigners can obtain Turkish citizenship by buying property worth at least USD 400,000, in one or more properties. The value must be supported by an SPK-licensed valuation report, the payment must go through Turkish banks with the currency conversion documented, and a 3-year no-sale commitment is noted on the title deed. Spouse and children under 18 are included. From application to passport usually takes about 3–6 months.
